William H. Taylor, an African American barber of Clarksville and St. Louis, Mo., was tried for the murder of Tobe Carlysle, an African American porter. Taylor was sentenced to be hanged, but was subsequently given a reprieve and pardon. He was also the former slave of Nina and Kate Harwood of New Orleans, La., prior to the Civil War.
